The handicraft industry is considered one of the oldest traditional industries that has been adopted by humans since ancient times until this moment. In the past, humans needed many important things in their lives, so they discovered an effective way to manufacture them using their hands or simple materials. Indeed, humans succeeded in the field of handicrafts and expressed their creativity, culture, and great imagination through them. Handicrafts became a plentiful source of livelihood for their owners, in addition to being a hobby that requires focus and creativity.
What is the history of handicrafts? What are their types?
Handicrafts have been present since the emergence of humans. They were one of the oldest industries that contributed to protection against external and environmental factors. Therefore, many leather products, embroidered fabrics, and carpets were made to protect homes from severe cold. The importance of handicrafts lies in being a source of entertainment and recreation for both genders, females and males. It evolved to become a source of income. However, it is not an easy task; it requires a long learning process, imagination, creativity, attention to detail, and concentration on the work. Additionally, it helps eliminate boredom and negative energy.
It is worth mentioning that these crafts still maintain their importance and quality in traditional markets. They represent ancient heritage, civilizations, and countries. Despite the presence of advanced technological machines and significant progress, some people still enjoy buying handicrafts and using them as decorative items or keepsakes.
What are the types of handicrafts?
Doll Making:
Have you ever wondered how to make a doll? Well, you can practice and create dolls easily using spare socks or unused fabrics at home. You can make various shapes of dolls (such as dolls, children, or other shapes). All you need to do is imagine the final design and start working on it. You can use colorful socks, plastic eyes, pens, glue, cotton, and threads. In the initial stage, it may seem difficult, but with continuous practice, you will improve. You can also find tutorials on doll making on the internet.
Doll making was indeed one of the famous handicrafts. It relied on artificial models and strings for movement. Ancient humans used it to entertain children through puppet shows. Dolls were made from wood and fabrics, and they were manipulated on stage by strings or by hand from behind a red cover.
Wooden Product Manufacturing:
Woodworking is a very ancient craft. In the past, skilled individuals known as carpenters relied on it to manufacture wooden doors, shapes, tent poles, and wooden containers used for carrying milk in the desert. This industry contributed to stimulating the economy and employing a large number of workers, passing down the craft through generations. Manufacturing wooden products requires high precision and artistic creativity in shaping them. This craft has evolved to the extent that small workshops were established with carpenters and trained workers.
It is worth noting that wooden product manufacturing is not limited to doors and pillars only. You can create many unique and diverse shapes according to customer requests. It is also possible to make sculptures, household furniture, and engage in wood carving and creating unique drawings.
Pottery:
Pottery making is considered one of the most important creative handicrafts. It is made from fired clay, and many distinctive shapes and utensils are produced. It involves obtaining clay, cleaning it, and shaping the desired model using a rotating machine. It should be mentioned that the Assyrians used pottery for writing. There are various shapes of pottery, such as pottery vessels, vases, plant pots, and more.
Knitting:
Knitting, or as known in French as "tricot," is one of the most creative and widespread handicrafts in the world. It involves interlocking threads to create unique shapes and turning them into fabric.
